Facebook Demystified

Facebook is fun Facebook is a wonderful, fun place that helps us rediscover long-lost friends and relatives and forge exciting new friendships with complete strangers who share our interests and concerns. This could never have happened before Facebook came along to provide us each with a custom community filled with laughs, joy, and many precious moments. But facebook is to noisy By default you are forced to see a lot of useless stuff you’d rather not and can often miss good stuff buried under the clutter. Settings are spread out in dozens of places, sometimes hidden. Over 99% of users do not understand them or how to set them properly. Convoluted settings prevent people from customizing their experience to make Facebook serve their purposes simply. With 500 million users, Facebook is a favorite target of scammers and spammers with countless clever and devious methods to ensnare unsuspecting people. Are you safe? Are you protected from hacking, phishing, scams, spam, online stalkers, identity theft, viruses, malicious worms, and other nasty things that are floating around? One wrong click could get you in trouble. In the two years I’ve been running Skillfoo, not a single week has gone by without at least one of my friends getting into some sort of jam -- that was usually avoidable.

Your passwords, not just on Facebook but from your personal email, bank account, or other source, can be stolen, without any virus getting installed on your system, if you don’t know how to protect yourself properly.

If you -- or ANY of your friends -- play games, then your Facebook information is accessible by strangers, strangers who don't always play nice. You don't need to stop playing, but you do want to play safe.

Creating a false identity on Facebook is fast and easy. All that’s needed is a free throwaway email account. Becoming Facebook Friends with strangers is a risk that requires preventative measures. You may try to be cautious but your friends might not. Their mistakes could cost you dearly -- unless you understand exactly what the risks are, and how to protect yourself and your friends. If you have children, grandchildren or students, I’m sure you want to prevent their photos or security-related information from getting into the wrong hands. Yet most people inadvertently choose settings that allow strangers access to private pictures and information -- even when they think they are doing it right by restricting access to just their friends. It’s important to understand the settings that control who sees your various activities on Facebook. Having friends, family and co-workers all together can pose problems, create embarrassing situations, or worse, when someone from one group sees an interaction you had with someone else, or views a picture someone else posted that you might not have wanted shared so widely. There have even been jobs lost, divorces and it's not uncommon for friendships to be destroyed because someone sees something someone posted. That’s because most users don’t understand who sees what on Facebook and how they can have control over their own Facebook presence.

They're unaware that strangers might be viewing their Posts and oblivious about how much of what they post is available through a simple Google search. They don't realize that even posts they DELETE are still being seen.

Did you know that sometimes what someone sees about your Facebook activity has nothing to do with either your settings or those of the person viewing it?

You could even have posts on your Wall, undesirable ones at that, which you can’t see but almost all your friends can? Yes, on YOUR Wall!!!

There are always a bunch of people who respond to the privacy issue with a remark like, “I have nothing to hide.” That’s only because they don’t realize the dangers involved in their innocent behavior, for example, giving their whereabouts in Status Posts. They might as well say, “Hey thieves, I’ll be vacationing next week, so it would be a perfect time for you to help yourselves to what you want at my home.” Friends and Friends of Friends on Facebook have robbed people this way. Not necessarily strangers either. You think you know what all your friends' drug habits are, or who is in desperate need of money?

I don't want to scare the bejezus out of people, these are extreme and relatively rare occurrences but they HAVE happened to real people like you and me. It's therefore important that you arm yourself with the knowledge to prevent this from happening to you, or a loved one.

I have helped tens of thousands of Facebook users with their questions and problems at my popular Facebook support page, Skillfoo.

Here are just a few comments people have left me on Skillfoo.

Michael - “THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY SKEPTICAL LITTLE HEART!!! Finally, somebody is looking out for us 'little people' on Facebook and giving us the info we need to make this place actually work the way WE want it to!”

Jane - “The only spot of sanity in the insanity of ‘privacy’ on Facebook. Skillfoo is so much more than our advocate; it is our go-to page for all things Facebook related. Rakesh, Skillfoo, and Skillfoo members are the most informative, insightful, inspired team on Facebook!”

Miriam - “I would give Skillfoo a 100-star rating! Rakesh is first to figure out the ins and outs of every change that comes along and helps us make sense of them. Rakesh's Skillfoo has been indispensable in helping us deal with the latest privacy changes. Don't know what we would do without him. He should be earning money for what he does!”

Anita - “*The* number one FB guru. Thanks for all you do to help us navigate the terrain. Sometimes it is a swamp out here.”

Vanessa - “Great practical advice, good guy with humor and manners, a great combination!”

Gill - “Skillfoo rocks. Thank you for your patience, humor and boundless knowledge :)”

Skillfoo on Facebook

The Skillfoo page has one major drawback however: It’s almost impossible to search because Facebook Pages aren’t designed for that. People often come back asking, “You had helped me with such and such problem but I’ve forgotten how. Can you please tell me again?” But sometimes even I can’t re-locate the answer! Facebook Pages simply aren’t structured for easy access to information. Also, Facebook changes constantly, so some older information is not valid anymore.
